THE ECCENTRIC OLD LADY
(I Wrote this story back in the eighties or nineties and it needed editing! I forgot I had written this short story!) ( First published by Substack on June 23, 2024)
She was an 85 year old lady who lived alone with her Ginger cat, Rickie. Her home was full of antiques, memorabilia, and nostalgia. She had photos and posters taped to her blue, bedroom walls of Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Bob Hope and Perry Como. Her bedroom was full of memories from her past. Stuffed animals, dolls that cried and said, “Mama” and an old wooden rocking chair and steamer trunk were in the other corner, a dresser against a wall, a chest of drawers against the other wall and the night table with a reading lamp on it was next to her large, maple bed.
She wore an old, raggedy, red house dress and a pair of red, satin slippers. Her short, gray curls bounced up and down as she danced to an old Perry Como record! Her gold bracelets dangled and jingled to the music as she twirled around the room!
She had no friends or family. The only friend she had was Rickie, her sweet Ginger cat! She loved Rickie so much that everywhere she went, Rickie followed! They played together, they ate together and slept together in her large, maple bed, under a large multicolored patch work quilt with lots of colored throw pillows.
But one day, the music and dancing stopped! She lay motionless on top of her large patch work quilt. Rickie laid down next to her and softly meowed and gently licked her face but she did not move. Rickie was all alone now!
Awww such a sad ending, but you did a nice job writing it, Connie
Ah, poor Ricky!
It sounds like that woman was happy. Thanks for posting, Connie.
